Somewhere along the way, a lot of us absorbed the same quiet rule: rest is something you earn after the work is finished. Finish the project, clear the inbox, get everyone else taken care of, then maybe you’ve earned a break.
Except the work is never finished. There’s always one more thing. Which means under that rule, rest never actually arrives. It just keeps getting pushed to a future that doesn’t come.
After bringing a retreat I’d been building for months to life, I came back with a different way of thinking about it, one I talked through on a recent episode. Rest isn’t what happens when everything stops. Rest is what allows you to keep becoming. It’s not the opposite of growth or ambition. It’s part of how growth and ambition stay sustainable instead of running you into the ground.
That reframe changes the question. It’s not “have I done enough to deserve rest.” It’s “what does it look like to rest as part of the work, not after it.”
Reflect on the rule you might be operating under
Where did you learn that rest has to be earned? A parent who never sat down. A workplace that praised exhaustion as dedication. A version of culture or expectation that equated busyness with worth. Naming the rule is the first step to choosing whether you still want to live by it.
Open to rest as evidence, not failure
A pause in your business, your parenting, your goals, isn’t proof you’re falling behind. It can be evidence of faith, that the thing you’re building doesn’t depend on you running yourself empty to sustain it.
Overcome the systems you didn’t mean to recreate
This is worth sitting with for a moment. A lot of us, especially women building something of our own after leaving environments that didn’t honor rest, end up recreating the same exhausting pace inside what we built to escape it. You don’t have to repeat what wasn’t given to you.
Thrive by choosing compassion over comparison
Honor the season you’re actually in, not the one you think you should be in by now. Your pause is not proof of falling behind. It’s information about what this season requires.
Brown Heart Mindful Moment
Sit for a moment without reaching for your phone. Let your breath settle into something slower than your day has been. Then sit with these:
What rule about earning rest am I still operating under?
Where might I be recreating a pace I actually wanted to leave behind?
What would it look like to choose compassion over comparison today?
The full episode, “When Rest Becomes the Brave Thing: Lessons from the Pause,” goes deeper into this, including what came out of the retreat itself. If you’re in a season where rest keeps feeling impossible to justify, that’s exactly the kind of thing worth bringing into a free consultation.
